Readings in Modern Japanese Literature
This
video is a delicate and beautiful rendering of the classic love
story by Miura Tetsuo, winner of Japan's Akutagawa
Prize for Literature. Though not a fully dramatized presentation,
viewers will experience the power of the original text while contemplating
the images of a traditional Japanese inn sumptuously photographed
by one of Japan's major film directors.
Set in a remote hot spring resort, deep in mountainous snow country,
Shinobugawa depicts the emerging love of a student, identified only
as "I" for a young waitress named Shino. As the story
is read, the interplay between the two actors gently suggests the
emerging love affair.
